Chicken Production -
Octavia Tsenane a married woman and a mother of five children is a business lady that raises chicken in a large-scale and has a small company that makes decoration for weddings and parties.
She started this business in 2006 alone in the backyard of her home with 500 chicks per month. In the second year the business increased to 1000 chicks per month and on the third year in 2008 she entered in a project with Higest (a company that produces and sells chicken food) where she began to create large quantities. In that year the project began with the creation of 10,000 chicks per month and from 2009 she began to create 20,000 chicks per month. Now she creates 15,000 to 20,000 per month depending on the season and temperature.
In the winter the production is higher because the temperatures is low and the chicks warm between them and die less while in the summer the production decreases due to the high temperatures which causes the death of many chicks.
Currently she rents an aviary in Marracuene and leases several others in Matola. She says that the reason for not having her own aviary is because the area where she was granted to build an industrial aviary still has no water and electricity things that are very important for the creation of chicks.
Her largest customers are the Higest, some companies and hotels that have machines to kill chickens due to the large quantities supplied.
The big difficult that she is facing at the moment is the lack of a machine to pluck the chickens and after that store them in a freezer.
In 2009 she began a business for decorating events. It’s a business that pays a lot of money and today she reaches up to 12 events per month. In this business she works with a sister who is the manager and has the support of her husband when he can because he works as an employee in a public sector.
